University city

The city is an important academic and university center. The roots of high education in Serbia are related to Kragujevac and the foundation of Lyceum in it, in 1838. On the foundations of this first high education institution in Serbia, a century and a half later, on May 21st 1976, the University in Kragujevac was established. The beginning is related to the period of the sixties when the departments of the Belgrade Faculty for Mechanical engineering and the Faculty of Economics, were founded here in Kragujevac.

In the previous period the University of Kragujevac was intensively developing, and today it consists of twelve Faculties. Six of the Faculties are in Kragujevac, where the seat of the University is, and the other six are in Cacak, Kraljevo, Jagodina, Uzice, and Vrnjacaka Banja. Besides Faculties, some the student institutions are also the part of the University, and they improve the standard of studying, by enrichment of the cultural, information, sport and recreation contents and by establishing cooperation on the international level.
